Hangar One shows you what distilling with craft methods is all about. There has never been a vodka anything like it. This extraordinary spirit is the joint brainchild of Ansley Coale, who co-founded Germain-Robin, and of Jorg Rupf, founder of St. George Spirits. No one really believed that vodka (even $30 or $50 vodka) was anything more than a relatively flavorless quick-distilled spirit made from inexpensive ingredients, dosed with additives, artificially flavored, and best mixed with other beverages. Jorg Rupf has taken vodka to an extraordinary new level, using artisanal brandy-distillation methods and basing his vodkas on rare, expensive, and real ingredients. First-time tasters simply cannot believe how great Hangar One is. www.hangarone.com

HANGAR ONE Straight vodka. Rupf has made unflavored vodka into a sophisticated product. He blends in neutral grape spirits distilled from viognier wine. Good wine grapes cost a lot more than potatoes; that's why so few producers use them for vodka. Silky smooth, with plenty of mouth appeal. Food & Wine chose the Straight as one of its "Spirits of the Year," called it "unprecedented." Playboy said it was "Too good to mix with tonic."

HANGAR ONE Citron "Buddha's Hand" vodka. The actual fruit, the Buddha's Hand citron, looks weird, but wow! The flavors are intense and rich, with fresh lemony aromatics. The literature says that the Chinese hang this citron in their houses to make things smell good. Rupf told us that they cost him $3 each! LA Times says: "Ravishing, inexplicable, enticing."

HANGAR ONE Kaffir Lime vodka. "Unlike anything I've experienced in 13 years of professional spirits evaluation"—Spirit Journal. The Kaffir Lime was ranked first in Wine Enthusiast's annual review of white spirits. They called it "stunning...true-to-the-fruit." The flavor really does "leap from the glass." The lovely flavor of kaffir lime is well known in Thai cuisine. St. George uses the leaves too! Wine & Spirits chose it as their BEST FLAVORED VODKA OF THE YEAR.

HANGAR ONE Mandarin Blossom vodka. Who else but Lance & Jorg would dream of including the flowers? Paul Pacult reviewed this as "wonder and delight." It's like peeling a fresh tangerine - the zesty tangerine and flower aromas are brought across perfectly. Wonderful lingering aftertaste. Pour it over a single small ice cube - it's as rewarding as a good cognac.

HANGAR ONE Fraser River Raspberry vodka. Five Stars from Spirit Journal. Hangar One distills this once a year, when the raspberries ripen. They use Meeker raspberries from Washington's Fraser River valley. A bit of fresh raspberry juice introduced after distillation makes it taste super fresh and gives the vodka a light raspberry color. It's beautiful product, with the natural sweetness - and tartness - of real fruit. The green glass bottle protects it from UV rays. Town & Country: "rich, rounded & smooth"; Dan Berger: "simply stunning." TWO BOTTLE LIMIT PLEASE.

ALEKSANDR'S crystallized cubes of ginger. Craft Distillers found some intense Australian baby-root ginger and put it in tins for bartenders to use with Hangar One Citron “Buddha’s Hand” (unbelievable taste combination). Just for fun, they did another 500 tins for the tasting room. 6.5 oz of the best ever. Great with the Kaffir Lime, too.
